NEW CHEMICAL
LABELING REQUIREMENTS!

OSHA is mandating a Globally Harmonized System (GHS) for classifying and labeling chemicals to increase worker safety by providing universally understood warnings to users. GHS impacts any business that produces, ships, or uses hazardous chemicals in the workplace. It is the responsibility of businesses to comply with GHS guidelines by using the correct labeling for their chemicals by June 1, 2016.

WHAT IS GHS?

What is GHS?
GHS is an OSHA-mandated system aiming to standardize the classification and labeling of chemicals to protect user safety. The major components of GHS are:

  • More detailed Hazard Classification criteria
  • Standardized Labeling of chemicals
  • Safety Data Sheet format standardization

Who has to comply?
Chemical manufacturers, importers, distributors and any company that has hazardous chemicals in the workplace must comply.

  • Employers with chemicals in the workplace must have compliant safety data sheets and labels for their chemicals and employees must be trained to handle them properly.
  • Chemical manufacturers must re-classify their hazardous chemicals based on a common system, update their safety data sheets and use GHS-compliant labels.
  • Chemical importers/distributors must ensure the hazardous chemicals they sell have GHS-compliant safety data sheets and GHS-compliant labels.
